Septran DS is a combination of two antibiotics: Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. These antibiotics work by preventing the bacteria from producing folic acid, a nutrient required for bacterial multiplication. Together, they treat your infection effectively.
How to use
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Septran DS may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. Take it with food, if it causes stomach upset.
Interactions / Warnings
Alcohol CAUTION It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Septran DS. Taking trimethoprim with alcohol may cause unpleasant side effects such as tingly feeling, nausea, and vomiting, fast heartbeats, warmth or redness under your skin, . Pregnancy WEIGH RISKS VS BENEFITS Septran DS is unsafe to use during pregnancy. There is positive evidence of human fetal risk, but the benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk, for example in life-threatening situations. Please consult your doctor. Lactation SAFE Septran DS is safe to use during lactation. Human studies have shown that either the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in significant amount or is not expected to cause toxicity to the baby. There may be a possibility of skin rash in the baby. Driving It is not known whether Septran DS alters the ability to drive. Do not drive if you experience any symptoms that affect your ability to concentrate and react. Kidney CAUTION Septran DS should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Septran DS may be needed. Please consult your doctor. Use of Septran DS is not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease. Liver CAUTION Septran DS should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Septran DS may be needed. Please consult your doctor. Use of Septran DS is not recommended in patients with the severe liver disease.
